All'americano Jonathan Olsen e alla nipponica Mami Kudo è stato attribuito - al termine di tutte le procedure previste - il titolo di Atleta dell'anno IAU in relazione alle prestazioni realizzate nel corso del 2013.
Ai fini della nomina, come negli anni precedenti, sono stati seguiti sia il criterio dei migliori piazzamenti conseguiti nel corso del 2013 sia quello delle preferenze espresse dai lettori della pagina ufficiale IAU e inviate attraverso il sito web.
Entrambi gli atleti selezionati come meritevoli del titolo hanno avuto nel 2013 una splendida stagione il cui culmine - per entrambi - è stata la vittoria conseguita al Campionato del Mondo 24 ore 2013 a Steenbergen (NED). Qui, Olsen, conquistando la prima piazza del podio, percorse 269,675 km, mentre la Kudo stabili - nell'occasione - la migliore prestazione mondiale con 252,205 km, assicurando al team giapponese l'Argento mondiale nella classifica a squadre.

It is with great pleasure we announce that the 2013 IAU Athletes of the Year are Jonathan Olsen (USA) and Mami Kudo (JPN).
This year´s nominees were based on athletes who made the podium in one of the IAU Major Championships and also athletes nominated by our readership through our website. The one underlying criteria was that the nominees should have done at least one IAU labelled race.
The short-list as posted on our website included outstanding athletes of 2013. The times/distances posted by these athletes was truly outstanding.
Both our winners, Olsen and Kudo, has an amazing season. The highlight of the races for both athletes was winning the 24 Hour World Championships in Steenbergen, the Netherlands. Olsen accumulated a distance of 269.675km to get USA to the gold medal spot. Kudo established a world´s best performance running 252.205 km getting Team Japan to the silver medal place.
