Si è conclusa la 1^ edizione del Campionato del Mondo 2015 IAU 50 km di corsa su strada, alla sua prima edizione assoluta a Doha (in Qatar) su di un circuito ricavato all'interno della grande installazione sportiva Aspire.
La gara si è disputata ieri, 4 dicembre 2015, con start alle ore 18.00 (ora locale).
In via preliminare, si può annunciare (in attesa di un comunicato IAU defiinitivo) che i vincitori sono stati entrambi statunitensi, Tony Migliozzi e Camille Herron.
Una novità, indubbiamente, è stata quella di vedere due atleti keniani al secondo e al terzo posto della gara maschile, consentendo con le proprie prestazioni al loro team nazionale di salire sul più alto gradino del podio della competizione a squadre, mentre la croata Maria Vrajic è stata la seconda donna.
In coda l'evoluzione della gara con i continui aggiornamenti del suo andamento così come sono stati pubblicati nel liveuptodate nel sito web della IAU.

8.24pm: Without a doubt, Smith (USA) is catching up to Herron (USA) and is now on her 7th lap, and still at 2nd place.

8.21pm: Herron (USA) is once again leading the woman´s race at 1st place on her 7th lap!

8.18pm: Tony Migliozzi (USA) has made a comeback and is now running at 1st place on his 8th lap! Maina (KEN) is at 2nd place also on his 8th lap, alongside Fokorani (ZIM) and Kiptaoi (KEN)

8.08pm: Catrin Jones (CAN) is now at 3rd place after Smith (USA).

8.00pm: Fokorani (ZIM) at 1st place , Maina (KEN) at 2nd place, Migliozzi (USA) at 3rd place and Kiptaoi (KEN) at 5th, and all on their 7th lap.

8.00pm: Herron (USA) is leading the woman´s race once again, and on her 6th lap alongside Smith (USA) in second place

7.46pm: Catriona Jennings (IRL) is now at 3rd place, while Galbadrakh (MNG) is at 4th place.

7.44pm: Maina (KEN) at 1st place, followed by Fokorani (ZIM) and Migliozzi (USA), are on their 6th lap alongside Kiptaoi (KEN), Andrews (USA), and Ogenki (KEN).

7.39pm: Camille Herron (USA) started her 5th lap, and amazingly still at 1st place!

7.36pm: Fokorani (ZIM) and Herron (USA), are both still at 1st place!

7.19pm: Herren and Smith (USA ) have completed their 4th lap, and are still in the lead!

7.12pm: The fourth lap has begun with Migliozzi (USA), Fokorani (ZIM) in the lead, with Maina (KEN) catching up at 3rd place.

7.09pm: Smith (USA) is at second place catching up to Herron (USA), both still in the lead.

659pm: Herron (USA), still in the lead of the woman´s race, going strong, and just completed her 3rd lap.

653:pm: the 3rd lap has begun, with Batbayar (MNG) in lead, followed by Migliozzi (USA), Fokorani (ZIM), and Ongeki (KEN)

6.51pm: Tyler Andrews (USA), is still in the lead of the male race at 1st place.

6.45: Catriona Jennings (IRL) from the 2012 London Olympics is taking part in the race, currently at 4th place after Sustic (CRO) in the woman´s race.

6.40pm: Herron and Smith (USA), are leading the woman´s race.

6.38pm: The second lap has begun with Andrews (USA), Attema (CAN), Batbayar (MNG), Fokorani (ZIM) in the lead.

6.31pm: The weather is at 24 degrees, slightly windy and slowly getting cooler.

6.25pm: Fokorani (ZIM), Ornelas (USA), Andrews (USA), lead a group of six runners. Herron (USA) and Sustic (CRO) lead the woman´s race.

6.20pm: Athletes have completed their first lap and they are running in a group.

The 1st IAU 50km World Championships took place in Doha Qatar The event was held on 4th December 2015 on Aspire grounds. The 5km looped course took the athletes through the different facilities in the sporting complex.

In the men’s division, Tony Migliozzi (USA) won the championship in 2:52:08. Kenyan compatriots, Arnold Kiptaoi and Samuel Ongaki finished in finished second-third in 2:55:34 and 2:56:15 respectively.

The men’s race started with a big group of runners running in a pack from the start with Migliozzi, Kiptaoi, Ongaki, Tyler Andrews (USA) and Michael Fokorani (ZIM) in the mix. As the race progress passed the first 25 km mark the lead pack dwindled down to Kiptaoi and Fokorani running in the front with Migliozzi running in third.

The last 10 kilometers were when the major changes started taking place. Migliozzi moved past Kiptaoi and Fokorani relying on his marathon speed. While further back in the field Charles Maina (KEN) and Jesse Davis (USA) were moving up the field as well.

In the end Migliozzi took home the world championships running his last 5km lap in 17:52 with Kenyan teammates Kiptaoi and Ongaki who moved up the field very quickly on the latter half finished with silver and bronze medals respectively.

In the team competition, Kenya won the gold in 8:49:09, USA finished with silver medal in 8:57:52 and Australia got the bronze in 9:37:51.

In the women’s race, Camille Herron (USA) took home the gold in 3:20:58. Marija Vrajic (CRO) finished 2nd in 3:28:15 followed by Catrin Jones (CAN) in 3rd with a time of 3:28:19.

This race shaped up different than the men’s race with Herron taking an early lead never relinquishing it and increasing her pace by the lap. Caitlin Smith (USA) took hold of the second place running consistently 30 seconds behind Camille for a few laps but then slowed down for the latter half of the event.

Khishigsaikhan Galbadrakh (MGL) had an outstanding run leading the chase group for three quarters of the race eventually finishing fifth. Vrajic, Jones and olympic marathon runner Catriona Jennings (IRL) adopted a different strategy of starting conservatively and making up the places as the race wore on.

In the end, Herron finished in the gold medal spot followed by Vrajic and Jones taking second and third place respectively.

In the women’s team division, Croatia finished first in 10:50:08. Canada took home the silver in 11:10:41 and Australia took the bronze in 11:31:40.

Worthy to note that 6 men finished under 3hours and 6 women finished under 3hours and 33 minutes.

In linea con le decisione assunta dalla IAAF (International Athletics Associations Federation), la IAU (International Association of Ultrarunner) conferma l'esclusione degli atleti russi da ogni tipo di competizione di ultramaratona targata IAU.

Provisional Suspension of the Russian Federation

The International Association of Ultrarnners (IAU) confirms that it will abide by and enforce the decision of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to provisionally suspend the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF).  

The effect of this is that no Russian athletes will be invited to participate in any official IAU competition. 

The IAU further expects that IAU-labelled races will not permit Russian athletes to participate in their events. The performances of Russian athletes will be removed from results of these events and will not be included in international ranking lists.

This will remain the position for as long as the suspension of ARAF by the IAAF remains in place.

We realize that all this very sad for the Russian athletes and we can only hope that their Federation will soon take the necesary measres to reinstate the intrenational confidence in their anti-doping policy.

Aspire, il LOC (Local Organizing Committee) della 1^ edizione del Campionato del Mondo IAU 50 km che si terrà a Doha (Qatar) il prossimo 4 dicembre 2015 ha reso noto che saranno messi in palio dei premi in denaro destinati ai primi cinque classificati uomini e donne. che verranno egualmente ripartiti da un fondo di 10.000 dollari., in questa misura:

• 1° classificato/a: $2000
• 2° classificato/a: $1400
• 3° classificato/a: $900
• 4° classificata/a:$500
• 5° classificato/a: $200

Sarà questa decisamente un'innovazione che accrescerà l'interesse dei partecipanti, anche se nello stesso tempo può sembrare una scelta discutibile rispetto alla pratica dell'Atletica di alto livello e la cui filosofia sottesa allontana più che avvicinare la disciplina delle ultramaratone dalla meta agognata di poter entrare a far parte del range delle gare olimpiche.
Collide  inoltre con il fatto che - nella maggior parte dei casi - sono le Federazioni nazionali ad inviare gli atleti nei rispettivi team e a sostenere le relative spese.
Legittimamente, i premi in denaro percepiti - stando così le cose - dovrebbero essere riversati nelle casse delle Federazioni.

Ma è - in ogni caso - un'iniziativa che la dice lunga su quanto si sia assottigliata la differenza tra sport professionistici e sport olimpici.

Prize Money 1st IAU 50km World Championships

The Local Organizing Committee (Aspire) have confirmed prize money at the 1st IAU 50km World Championships.   
There will be a $10000 purse divided between men and women divisions receiving $5000 each. 

The prize money will be go five deep with the top 5 runners receiving the following:

1st Place: $2000
2nd Place: $1400
3rd Place: $900
4th Place: $500
5th Place: $200

Sono disponibili sul sito ufficiale della IAU i link che portano ai risultati completi e definitivi del Campionato del Mondo (+Europeo) Iau 100 km che ha avuto luogo a Winschoten tra il 12 e il 13 settembre 2015.

Il cambiamento sostanziale nella classifica a squadre maschile (mondiale ed europea) è stato determinato dal fatto che un componente della squadra maschile russa (Vasily Larkin) non indossava l'uniforme regolamentare della squadra russa, come segnalato ufficialmente, e che pertanto non era facilmente riconoscibile come appartenente al team in corso di gara.

La decisione arbitrale tuttavia non ha avuto alcun peso nel modificare i risultati individuali ma solo quelli della classifica a squadre, con un provvedimento che ha portato la squadra russa in quinta posizione.
Il provvedimento arbitrale, con relative motivazioni, è riportato in calce.

There was a protest about a single athlete in the Russian team to the Race Referee which was upheld by the Jury of Appeal after the race before the final results were certified. (Statement here) This results in the athlete’s performance for the team race being rendered invalid and the Russian team’s aggregate score corrected to place them fifth.

REPORT OF THE JURY OF APPEAL
IAU 100km WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
12 September 2015

1. The team from FRA lodged a protest with the IAU Referee against the team (men) from RUS, for breaching IAU Rule 8.1 (which is similar in all material respects with IAAF Rule 143.1), in that some of their team members did not all wear the kit approved by their federation.

2. It was made clear, after clarification by the IAU Referee, that the protest was against the team result and not the individual runner result.

3. From the evidence before the jury and their own observations, it was clear that at least one member of the RUS men’s team, (Vasily Larkin) did not compete in recognised federation kit.

4. The RUS team did not advise the IAU or the LOC of any problems with their team kit before or during the race.

5. The jury was unanimous that there was a contravention of IAU Rule 7 (IAAF Rule 143.1), and that the athletes in question who were not correctly attired should be removed from the team result.

6. This will result in the RUS athlete being removed from the team result.

7. Accordingly, the decision of the jury of appeal is that:

a. As the protest was not against the individual results, they are unaffected.

IAU has offiicially formatted their response in reference to the disturance caused by the management of the Russian Federation.
The IAU Executive Council has reported the incident to the Russian Federation who will organize an investigation. This matter will be further discussed with the President and the General Secretary further at the occassion of the Convention of the European Athleics to be held in Lausanne in mid october.

The 28th IAU 100km World Championships took place in Winschoten, the Netherlands on 12th September 2015.
In addition to the worlds this was also the 23rd Edition of the IAU European Championships.

Men's Race. The race was going to be quite a fast one right from the start with a flat course combined with cool starting time temperature. The athletes stuck to this game plan as was evident by James Walmsley (USA) who was about 4 minutes ahead of the lead pack at one point. In the chase group Steven Way (GBR) and Buud kept a steady pace decreasing Walmsley’s lead on every lap.

Behind the chase group Asier Cuevas (ESP) led a very hard pace with Giorgio Calcaterra (ITA) making their moves and moving up the ranks. At the 63km mark, Buud who has finished in the silver medal position on four different times at the world championships, made his move and went past Walmsley.

Buud held on to run a very fast 6:22:44 for the world championship for his first victory on the IAU stage. Following him Cuevas moved comfortably in 2nd place finishing in 6:35:49.

Calcaterra, former world champion, kept fighting hard to return to the world’s podium first time in four years, caught Vasiliy Larkin (RUS) in the last lap getting his podium finish. He finished in the bronze position running 6:36:49.

The three top athletes in the world’s competition also ended up being the podium finishers in the European Championships. In the world team’s competition, Sweden took gold with a time of 19:59:40 followed by Italy and France finishing with 20:32:29 and 20:37:43 respectively. The same teams doubled up in the European Team Competition.

The women’s race shaped up to be quite different than the strategy playing in the men’s field. Herron finished first in the women’s race taking the lead right from the start. An accomplished marathoner and running only in her second 100km, Herron showed that her time at the US championships was not one-time thing and ended up winning the world championships in 7:08:35.

There was a close competition between Chiyuki Mochizuki (JPN) and Kajsa Berg (SWE) for the first 50kms the race until Berg went past Mochizuki and strongly claimed the 2nd position in 7:20:48. A very impressive run for Berg who recently returned from hiatus after having twins earlier in the year.

Marija Vrajic (CRO) stuck to a different game plan at these world championships, in contrast to the previous ones, and ran a more conservative race at the start. She went by Joasia Zakrzewski (GBR) in the last laps of the race claiming that bronze medal running 7:27:11.

In the European Championships, Berg took gold followed by Vrajic in silver and Zakrzewski took home the bronze in 7:31:33.

In the world team competition, United States of America took gold in 22:39:35, followed by Sweden in silver and Russia in bronze running 22:51:06 and 23:30:05 respectively. In the European Competition, Sweden took gold, followed by Russia in silver and Croatia winning the bronze in 23:37:13.

In addition to the above championships, the race also hosted the World Masters 100km Championships, the Dutch and the Belgian national championships.
