Nel contesto di The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc® 2014, nella prova "regina" che è stata l'Ultratrail du Mont Blanc (UTMB®: 168 km e 9600 m di dislivello positivo in semi autonomia, oltre 2300 concorrenti alla partenza il venerdì 29 agosto, alle 1730, con percorso da Chamonix a Chamonix in 46 ore max), la vittoria è andata al francese François D'Haene (20h11'44: un record che rimarrà a lungo come punto di riferimento) e alla statunitense Rory Bosio (23h23' 20). Seconda splendida vittoria per entrambi.

Alle spalle di D'Haene, un ex æquo - in seconda piazza del podio - per il connazionale Tofol Castaner Bernat e per lo spagnolo Iker Karrera Aranburu in 20h55'42. 
Con le vittorie conseguite nella lunga distanza Francçois D'Haene diviene un maestro incontestato sulle lunghissime distanze trail. 

Alle 14h11 di questo sabato, sotto un sole splendente, il francese François D'Haene si è concesso una doppietta nell'UTMB®, dopo una prima vittoria nel 2012.

In 20h11.44 ha realizzato un record che resterà un punto di riferimento, avvicinandosi alla barra simbolica delle 20 ore di corsa.

L'exploit del 12° vincitore dell'UTMB® è stato applaudito da migliaia di spettatori, in una Chamonix in trepidante attesa!

Nonostante l'apparente dominio della gara, François D'Haene, che ha condotto la corsa restando saldamente in testa, confessa di avere vissuto una prova davvero sfiancante. Prima di tutto a causa delle condizioni verificatisi all'inizio della gara, nella serata di venerdì, quando una fitta pioggia battente si è riversata sui sentieri, rendendoli difficilmente percorribili dalla folla dei corridori.

«Saremmo potuti andare ancora più veloce, ma in certi punti era impossibile correre» - spiega il vincitore - «Affondavamo nel fango, gli appoggi erano molto instabili, eravamo zuppi...» Ma François D'Haene ha soprattutto dovuto affrontare gli affondi dei due soli atleti capaci di accompagnarlo sul filo dei km, i suoi compagni del team Salomon, gli spagnoli Tofol Castaner e Iker Karrera.

A turno, ciascuno dei due ha tentato di far vacillare il primato del longilineo corridore francese di 28 anni. «A Courmayeur (KM 77), Iker Karrera ha impresso una forte accelerazione alla gara. Mi sono sforzato di attenuare il distacco, di temporeggiare. Non ero in cattiva forma, ma mi dicevo che non eravamo che al km 80, e che restava ancora un bel tratto di cammino» - racconta François.

Inseparabile, il trio di testa è rimasto assieme tutta la notte. Nella prima mattinata, con il ritorno di un clima asciutto e rasserenati da « una bella notte trascorsa assieme », l'impegno di François D'Haene ha portato i suoi frutti: «Se volevo fare la differenza, era a Champex o a La Fouly che dovevo tentare. Perché il resto del tracciato rende difficile creare un distacco». Una strategia che ha pagato, adottata a La Foulie (km108). Una falcata che si allunga, degli avversari che cedono, e la vittoria si delinea all'orizzonte per il viticoltore che da tre anni vive nel Beaujolais.

«La distanza tra noi era minima, la vittoria ce la siamo davvero giocata» riconosce François D'Haene. A Vallorcine (149km), lo scarto di 35 minuti tra il francese e il duo spagnolo, che ha fatto fronte comune, sembra irrimediabile. Lo sarà fino alla Place du Triangle de l'Amitié de Chamonix. Iker Karrera, visibilmente più in forze di Tofol Castaner, non ha voluto rompere il sodalizio con il compatriota, e l'ha aspettato in cima alla Flegère. I due uomini concluderanno mano nella mano ex aequo al secondo posto.

François D'Haene firma, in questa stagione, la una seconda vittoria in una gara di Ultra-trail®, dopo quella del Monte Fuji (Giappone), alla fine di aprile. Con il suo trionfo al Grand Raid de la Réunin, alla fine del 2013, François diventa un maestro incontestato della lunga distanza. Alle 16.h55 Rory Bosio, l'americana detentrice del titolo 2013, oltrepassa la linea del traguardo dopo 23 ore, 23 minuti e 20 secondi di gara.

(English) Beautiful 2nd victory on the UTMB® for François D'Haene and Rory Bosio. 2:11pm this Saturday afternoon, the French runner, François D'Haene ran through the finish line and doubled his title (winner of the UTMB® in 2012) under a beaming sun.

Completing the route in 20h11 44, he owns the new record, getting closer to the symbolic 20h.

Thousands of spectators came to welcome the masterstroke of the 12th winner of the UTMB®. Chamonix was overexcited! 

Despite all signs of domination, François D'Haene, who led the race all the way, confess that he had very demanding race. At first because of the weather conditions at the beginning of the race, when downpour flooded the paths, making them hardly "runnable" for the contestants. "We could have ran even faster but it was too hard to run" - said the winner - "We were sinking into the mud, our stride was unstable, and we were soaked...".
But François D'Haene had especially to fight against the only two athletes able to stick to his tempo all along the kilometers, his teammates from Salomon, the Spanish Tofol Castaner and Iker karrera.

Each one tried to bother François a little but the 28 years old French runner could not be distracted. "In Courmayeur (Km77), Iker Karrera speeded up a lot. I did my best to temporize. I felt well but I told myself that I only was at the 8Oth km and that there was a long way to go" - tells François.

Inseparable, the three runners stayed together all night. In the morning, weather was better and François felt well after the night, he made his acceleration: "If I wanted to win, I had to make the difference in Champexor La Fouly because it is hard to increase the gaps".

A clever strategy finally set up in La Fouly (km 108). A longer stride, yielding opponents, and a win becoming real for this wine-maker, working in the Beaujolais for 3 years now.

"The competition was hard, we fought for the win" - recognize François D'Haene - In Vallorcine (149km), there are 35 minutes between François and the Spanish duo, it seems to be definitive. And it will be that way until the Place du Triangle de l'Amitié in Chamonix. Iker Karrera, who seems to feel well compared to Tofol Castaner, did not want to break the holy alliance with his fellow countryman and waited for him in La Flégère. The two men will finally cross the finish line together, both at the 2nd place.

It is the second victory on an Ultra-trail® race for François D'Haene after winning the Mont Fuji in Japan. With his success on the Grand Raid de la Réunion, end of 2013, François becomes the master of this length.

The American Rory Bosio, winner in 2013, crossed the finish line at 4:55pm after 23h23' 20 of race.
